We empower women to lead in the protection and management of the environment.
The Women’s Network for Environmental Sustainability (WoNES) was established in Sierra Leone in 2013 and registered as a non-governmental organization. Our primary focus is the empowerment of women to advocate for environmental justice. Despite constituting over half of Sierra Leone's population, women face significant disparities in accessing information and education on environmental issues. WoNES aims to harness the numerical strength of women to draw attention to urgent actions needed to prevent a global environmental crisis.
We are governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of dedicated individuals with expertise in corporate governance and environmental management. Our management team consists of experienced professionals supported by volunteers with diverse competencies. District focal persons are appointed to engage with community stakeholders, providing timely information on environmental conditions and the importance of sustainable practices
Throughout this relatively short period of our existence which have been characterised by an epidemic (Ebola) that almost brought the affected countries to a standstill, including Sierra Leone, and a global pandemic (COVID-19) that is still wreaking havoc in countries with more developed economies, we have had constructive engagements with several local and international partners.
